On Friday the 16th July "Barrydale Cares" received a visit from The Nelson Mandela Foundation together with a number of bikers who are doing their 67 minutes (and more) to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 92nd birthday. We had arranged soup and bread for the elderly for the bikers to serve to the elderly, and many others, who had arrived at the hall. After the visitors were welcomed by the Ebenaezer singing group with a rendering of our National Anthem, they were then officially welcomed by the mayor, Mr Jansen. A presentation of 100 soft, warm blankets was handed to our social worker, Mrs Annaline Zulch by Morgan Freeman on behalf of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
CONTINUED....
These blankets will be handed out by Annaline with her usual discretion to the desperately poor and some will be kept for emergency purposes. Morgan Freeman was amongst the many people who got stuck into dishing out cups of the thick homemade soup and we were able to provide about 400 people with something to eat. Many thanks go to everyone who made the soup, to the police for everything they did, to Mr Jansen for all his assistance and to The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the bikers for including us in this special bikers trip.
This week has been an exceptional week for Barrydale Cares as we have also received substantial donations from sisters, Silvia & Bernadette Blank who live in Germany as well as Alexandra Pickford who lives in England. They are all regular visitors here. Our heartfelt thanks to you all for your kindness, generosity and support.
The Bikers and celebrities would have got a very
good impression of the spirit of the people of Barrydale when they lunched at
The Country Pumpkin as Dereck de Villiers did his 67 minutes for Mandela and
gave them all a completely free lunch. This would have been
totally unexpected by them and hats off to Dereck for his generosity.
