Due to lack of funds and lack of Municipal support the successful monitoring programme recently set up by Cape CROW could cease this month.
Cape CROW is hopeful that the programme can be held together but, although their hope is that the Municipality will do what is required of them, they are asking for donations from residents to keep the programme going until it is properly funded. the baboons have been peacefully kept out of Barrydale town every day since its inception, except for 2 incidents, which were quickly rectified, thanks to good communication between all parties concerned. Many residents have also expressed gratitude at the absence of encroaching baboons into their homes and gardens. The monitors, under the leadership of our volunteer monitor have improved their skills and all have applied themselves diligently under varying circumstances, especially the long hours and sometimes difficult weather conditions. From our perspective, the loss of jobs that the programme created, is most disappointing. However, Cape CROW itself is a charity organization, and is unable to fund the Barrydale baboon monitoring programme, nor provide the daily use of a vehicle which it has done to date, and which the project needs".
