From bedridden to basket weaving
Thursday, 29 October 2009 17:20

Johan Majola, BarrydaleIn 1999 a fork lift tilted and landed on Johan Majola's legs. This accident left him bedridden and helpless. Peter Takelo, a good friend, taught Johan to take care of himself and the new challenges he faced. Johan also learnt how to make baskets. This gave him the enthusiasm to get from bed to a wheelchair and ultimately on to independent movement for a few hours each day. A small income is derived from basket making which helps sustain Johan, his wife Elsabe and his niece Thabisa.  Now Johan is an active member of the community and  is  motivated to help other handicapped people in the village but needs help.

To buy Johan's baskets, as well as other handicraft, visit Barrydale Handweavers at the Bellanti in Laing Street. Alternatively contact Johan on 0727239052 (he speaks mostly Afrikaans). If you have any ideas on how to help Johan with his handicraft project please inform Barrydale-Online or contact him directly. (Thanks from Barrydale-Online to Clive Strawbridge and Timothy Teale of "Two's Company", design consultant, practicing architects, who generously offered to revamp the Majola's front stairs free of charge. The stairs were impossible for Johan to navigate with one artificial leg and the other filled with steel pins).

"Donate 5 cents" Project (VEP)
Friday, 30 October 2009 14:29

Shoes for a child, money collected from 5 cent piecesGloudina Crous, Co-ordinator of the Victims Empowerment Programme says:

"I started a 5c project in Barrydale. My aim for it is to be a continuous project. I use this money to buy school necessities for those who cannot afford it. The number one reason for children leaving school is because they cannot afford the basic things like pencils, pens, sharpeners ect. By providing them with the necessities they can go to school without feeling embarrassed and thereby continue their education.
With the 5c pieces I received from family and friends, I was able to buy a child a pair of school shoes. Negosiegat donated the stationary for this child.
Those interested in donating to this project can drop it of at Pep Stores in Barrydale or at the police station. Your 5c would really make a difference".

Drug abuse instruction, Weltevrede farmschoolGloudina Crous instructing children at the Weltevrede farmschool on the dangers of drug abuse. The VEP has an ongoing education programme - helping women and children and instructing them on empowering themselves against violence, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, crime etcetera. For more information contact Gloudina Crous  on 0722538833. All help is most welcome.

Silver medal for Farnus
Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:40
Fanus MarthinusAlthough Farnus Marthinus (29) has had little formal training, he managed to come 10th out of the 170 competitors in the Tradouw Pass Half Marathon held on Saturday October 23rd. He was the first of the 4 entrants from Barrydale to finish, with a time of 1 hour 29 minutes and by doing so won a Silver Medal. It was his 4th time in the Tradouw run and his result this year has encouraged him to train seriously and he hopes to improve his finishing place and time next year. Fanus also intends to compete in the Flakte Half Marathon between Heidelberg and Witsand at the end of November. He has his eyes set on an assault on the Comrades Marathon in Natal as well.

Fanus is a graduate of Barrydale High School where he won 100m, 200m and 400m events. He also distinguished himself playing rugby for the school and the Barrydale Flying Eagles as outside centre. He is partner to Freda and they have two children Cubit (13) and Francois (9).

"Feed me" time for village birds
Written by Dr. Terry Oatley
Monday, 05 October 2009 16:27

Egyptian Goose, photo by Ross WarnerOctober is “Feed me” time for the many village birds that have young out of the nest. These newly fledged offspring have insatiable appetites and many follow their parents around, begging raucously.  Some species, as befits their habit, are not loudmouths.  The Cape Robin-chat juveniles are silent; it is rather their parents that make the noise, uttering their wurdudur alarm calls whenever a cat ventures into view.

The Cape and Masked Weavers’ youngsters are pretty vocal, following their mothers around with shivering wings and harsh begging calls.  The adult Fiscal Shrike (aka Jackie Hangman)...

Canary song heralds spring in Barrydale
Written by Dr. Terry Oately
Thursday, 03 September 2009 12:04

Cape Canary (photo Jean-Phillippe Paris)September is the real spring month in Barrydale, with many balmy, windless days on which it is neither too cool nor too warm to venture out and admire all that Nature has to offer in this part of the world.  Frontal weather may still bring some cold winds and even rain, but this acts as a stimulus for birdsong in the fine days that follow. Among the leading songsters are the canaries, of which Barrydale can boast up to six species. Cape Canaries sing in choirs from treetops, and pairs of Streaky-headed Canaries trill their characteristic refrains to each other.  White-throated and Brimstone Canaries occur in the area throughout the year, and Yellow Canaries may frequently be seen. There is also the chance of encountering the handsome Black-headed Canary, which is not resident here, but occasionally turns up and lingers awhile in September...
